Curriculum for Excellence

The Curriculum for Excellence is the new national curriculum in Scotland which has been designed to ensure that all young people experience a broad, coherent and progressive learning experience throughout their time in education. The aim of the curriculum is to develop the four capacities:

  • Successful learners
  • Confident individuals
  • Responsible citizens
  • Effective contributors

Curriculum for Excellence promotes learning through real life experiences and emphasises the benefits of interdisciplinary learning.

‘Carefully planned interdisciplinary learning provides good opportunities to promote deeper understanding by applying knowledge and understanding and skills in new situations and taking on new challenges.’[1]

Voyages on-board Ocean Youth Trust’s fleet of vessels contribute to the outcomes across the entire curriculum and provide young people with a very genuine and challenging learning environment. Resources have been produced to support learning across all curricular areas with specific lesson resources that can be used both in school and on-board the boats. The Teacher’s Guidebook below has been produced to support teachers in all aspects of booking and planning voyages and there are record books for the 1st to 4th Levels to record the learning that takes place during voyages. To access the the full range of resources that have been created please contact the Development Team.

In addition, the trust offers teachers a fully accredited residential CLPL course alongside an on-line training module for teachers and youth workers helping them to fully understand the role sail training can play in delivering the national curriculum. To access this on-line module please contact the Development Team

The above suite of videos covering all curriculum areas have been produced. These are designed to inspire teachers and show how the objectives of the curriculum can be delivered on-board the trusts vessels, with interviews from practising teachers who have experienced life on-board the Trust’s vessels.

Moreover, a course to be delivered in partnership to pupils in the senior school ensures that schools can meet the needs of all learners with the addition of an alternative curriculum option. More information on this can be found by contacting the Development Team (contact details below).

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland offers a structured approach to offering young people a cross curricular learning experience that contributes to their overall educational achievement, and in turn, makes sail training a more accessible option for teachers in supporting them to deliver the curriculum.

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland are now taking bookings for voyages in 2016. Interested teachers should contact the Development Team on 0141 722722 or email office@oytscotland.org.uk.
