Get to know the OYT Scotland Volunteers! ⛵

In today’s ‘Meet the OYT Scotland Volunteers’ we hear from a board member and volunteer for whom sailing has been very much a family affair.

Today’s volunteer: Josie Walbaum

⛵ Q: How long have you been a volunteer with OYTS and what is your role as a volunteer?

A: I’ve been a volunteer for about 8 years and I sail as a Watchleader and enthusiastic cake-maker.

⛵ Q: What and with whom was your first sailing experience and what made you come back for more?

A: I’ve sailed since I was wee with my family and even though I was terrified of the sailing part, I always loved going away and exploring different places. Also, dolphins jumping around the boat never gets old.

⛵ Q: Proudest or most memorable sailing moment?

A: I used to be absolutely terrified of sailing, but the turning point for me was when I went for a weekend with my Dad. It was beautiful sunshine and we were sailing down the Sound of Luing with the tide. Our wee boat was going as fast as she could, the gunnels were in the water and I had my feet dipped in over the side – I fell in love with sailing then.

⛵  Q: What made you start volunteering with OYT Scotland?

A: My Dad was sailing as a First Mate at the time, and I met another volunteer through the Uni Sailing Club. I’ve always loved working with young people so it seemed like an amazing opportunity.

⛵ Q: What is your favourite part of being a volunteer with OYT Scotland?

A: I love seeing the change in group dynamic over a voyage. At the beginning of a trip everyone is nervous and unsure of each other, and by the end of the week it’s like a wee family.

⛵ If you were a boat, what kind of boat would you be and why?

Any boat that involves baking cakes, playing games and keeping an eye out for sealife.
