Find out a little bit more about Barry from our fun questions!

1. How did you first start sailing with OYT Scotland?

1989 on the Samuel Whitbread, before sailing on TAIKOO in Scotland for many season as a Bosun, then on Lady Beaverbrook (Falmouth Packet) on the Transatlantic race in 1992.

2. What’s your favourite OYT Scotland memory?

Too many – probably putting up a No 2 Jib in a bit of a blow upside down in the middle of the Atlantic and coming back to find the Skipper laughing not telling me off, says a lot about the spirit of OYT Scotland!

3. What is your job outside of OYT Scotland and what particular set of skills do you bring to the organisation?

I am the Director for Scotland for the Youth Charity – The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award(DofE).  The DofE supports 42,000 young people across Scotland to undertake a programme of self development around a number of key themes including Volunteering and undertaking an Expeditions  – many young people participate in OYT Scotland as part of their DofE Award.  I am also currently Chair of the National Voluntary Youthwork Organisations in Scotland and hope that I can bring broad experience of the Youthwork and Education sector to OYT Scotland and an understanding of the regulatory and policy environment.

4. Why do you enjoy being on the board of OYT Scotland?

OYT Scotland, as Scotland’s national sail training organisation has a fantastic opportunity to bring the experiences that have shaped me as an individual to a wide range of young people from across every community in Scotland.  I am passionate about that opportunity and hope that my engagement in the Board can further that key aim of the organisation.

5. What are your hobbies apart from sailing with OYT Scotland?

After trying to be a good Dad to young Daughters I do try and get out on my Mountain Bike and have recently got back into Dinghy Cruising.
