Get to know the OYT Scotland Volunteers! ⛵

In a bid to keep you updated and entertained during lockdown, and to give you the chance to know how it feels to volunteer for OYT Scotland, we’re putting the spotlight on a different volunteer each day!

Today’s volunteer: Will Morton

⛵ Q: How long have you been a volunteer with OYTS and what is your role as a volunteer?

A: I sailed Venturer when she was brand new in 2000 & I’ve still got the T Shirt to prove it! My favourite memories are crabbing and people being seasick, I’m still friends with two of the crew from that voyage!

⛵ Q: Proudest or most memorable sailing moment?

A: In 2012 OYT lead the RYA Flotilla filling the Clyde with boats and Explorer’s bilge with champagne. The event was becoming far too serious, so in the true spirit of OYTS we made more fun by having a cheering competition between the two banks of the river!

⛵ Q: What is your favourite part of being a volunteer with OYT Scotland?

A: Watching the change in people, it’s easy to say a voyage has been “life changing” but I’ve seen it, I’ve seen people grow and learn and change and have fun doing it! I’ve seen aspiration emerge and seen crew become leaders for the first time. I’ve seen self belief. In short I’ve seen Sail Training at it’s best and I love it.

⛵ Q: If you were a boat, what kind of boat would you be and why?

A: A Sail Training Boat… can you imagine the stories Venturer holds after 20 years! Can you imagine what it feels like to be an Ex Round The World Thoroughbred like Alba Explorer now being the plaything of teenagers and getting to teach them who they really are…
