Pilot STEM Project Sets Sail Thanks to Inverclyde Locals

Young people pose on the deck of Alba Venturer with group leaders, volunteers and sea staff

On 11th September 2023, 10 young people from Clydeview Academy joined us for a pilot STEM voyage aboard Alba Venturer.

The first of its kind, this voyage was designed to take the traditional STEM subjects and approach them in a new and exciting way.

Young people embraced all aspects of the voyage, from rope and sail work to passage planning, helming and domestic duties.

Teacher, Ms Afuakwah, said: “I loved seeing pupils rise to the challenge of trying out new skills, adapt to a completely new daily routine and being pushed out of their comfort zones.”

The young people sailed a total of 120 nautical miles, reaching as far as Troon and Tarbert before returning to James Watt Dock, Greenock.

Thank you to the voters of Tesco Extra Port Glasgow and Tesco Community Grants for making this project possible!
